Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda

Culture, Marketing Leadership

“This game’s very simple. You block, you tackle, you win. If you don’t, you lose.”  —Andy Easton

Every Fall at the start of football season, my teammates and I would recount the prior season’s team strengths and playoff performance. Inevitably the conversation would turn to a bad call a referee made, an opponent’s “miracle” play or the impact of a key player’s season-ending injury that kept us from winning the state championship.

Eavesdropping on this conversation was our salty-dog coach, Andy Easton—all 6 feet 3 inches, 350 pounds, 48-inch belly, 28 teeth, and gnarled fingers of him. Coach Easton did not suffer fools, light weights, those unwilling to work, AND definitely NOT excuse-makers.

After listening to our soliloquies for a few minutes, we would hear his booming voice, “WOULDA, COULDA, SHOULDA..all it means is that you DIDN’T! Now shut up and let’s get to work!”

And, so we did.

“If you want to win, run faster.”  Andy Easton

Be prudent.
