The Rules of the Prudent Strategist
Some rules define what you do. These define who you are.
They are the truths beneath the strategy. The habits behind high performance.
The most important rules are seldom written. They’re simply enforced.
In golf, you never walk across another player’s putting line.
In baseball, you never step on the foul line.
In business, you don’t outshine the boss in public.
In cycling, you don’t wear underwear under your bibs or spit in a pace line.
Every serious craft has its code.
Professional services growth is no different.
These are The Rules of a Prudent Strategist.
Forged not from theory, but borne of scars earned in the BS of PS.
They are our standards.
Be Bold. Be Prudent.
Growth doesn’t start with tactics. It starts with clarity.
Every firm says it wants to grow. The real question is: Where are you going—and what will it take to get you there? Align your vision with the truth about your firm, clients, and path forward.
1. Be bold. But first, be prudent.
Growth starts with knowing what not to do, then doing what you must.
2. Don’t build a brand. Build a firm worth believing in.
You aren’t if you need brand language to explain who you are.
3. You can’t market your way out of mediocrity.
If your Thinker can’t innovate, your Seller can’t connect, and your Doer can’t deliver, no amount of marketing will save you.
4. How you sell is how prospects expect you’ll serve.
Client experience begins at the first contact — not after the contract.
5. The BS of PS is not a flaw. It’s a constraint.
You don’t ignore it. You design with it.
6. Brand Preference defines winning.
It’s not awareness or buzz — it’s who the market prefers at the table.
7. Your POV is your differentiator. Have one.
Insight is not “content.” It is a strategic discipline.
8. If your Ideal Client definition doesn’t exclude someone, it’s not strategy.
Focus is the discipline that fuels preference.
9. Courage and comfort are mutually exclusive.
Confront your fear, and it loses its control over you.
10. Ride in the rain.
Conditions will never be perfect. The real gains come when you go out and others stay in.
11. Real strategy feels boring. That’s how you know it’s working.
Sizzle fades—systems scale.
12. What your leaders value becomes your brand.
Not what your website says. It’s what you reward.
13. Heroic efforts don’t scale.
High performance is a process—not a personality.
Our lives—and our firms—are shaped by what we live for.
Spend your time wisely.
Be Magnanimous. Be Relevant.
Thought leaders change how the world does business.
Every firm claims to be special; few actually are. Differentiation and growth aren’t the result of simply more activity. It results from sharper insight, a deeper fit, and more deliberate execution. Thought leaders genuinely influence the market by creating, advancing, and sharing ideas to help others.
14. Relevance is earned, not claimed.
You become relevant by solving a problem that matters, when it matters.
15. Strategy is a choice. Brand is the proof. Culture is the cost.
Misalignment here is the most expensive mistake you’ll ever make.
16. Magnanimity is the ceiling of leadership.
Big vision. Bigger heart. Highest standard.
17. If they don’t share your POV, they’re not your Ideal Client.
Disqualify fast and draft elsewhere.
18. Leadership defines culture. Culture defines brand. Brand defines growth.
Everything else is tactics.
19. Expertise, Results, and Simpatico are the answer.
Your GTM strategy exists to deliver them. Everything else is noise.
20. Growth, like fitness, is achieved when you go to the gym, even if you don’t feel like it.
Firms don’t fail for lack of ambition. They fail for lack of the right behavior.
If it’s hard, you’re probably doing it right.
It doesn’t get any easier; you just get faster.
Be Tenacious. Be Your Best.
Reinforce behavior, culture, and execution under pressure
Every great strategy eventually meets resistance. When it does, only culture carries you through. In a world chasing shortcuts and silver bullets, grit becomes your unfair advantage because firms don’t scale on ambition alone—they scale on behavior repeated with discipline.
21. Brand = Reputation = Behavior = Culture.
It’s as real as gravity.
22. Fortitude is not just a mindset. It’s a muscle.
Stay the course. The win comes in lap 17, not lap 2.
23. Clients don’t separate marketing, sales, and delivery. Neither should you.
They just call it “the experience.”
24. A misaligned firm will collapse under pressure.
Might not be today. Might not be tomorrow. But it’s coming.
25. If you aren’t making people mad, you aren’t doing anything.
Breaks some eggs; don’t be an asshole.
26. Discipline, not rigidity.
Intelligent people prefer to agree, rather than be told.
27. A firm that tolerates dysfunction internally will communicate it externally.
Your culture leaks through every action, communication, and deliverable.
28. Accountability is the most powerful brand strategy.
Nothing aligns behavior better than having the tough conversation.
29. Trust, like happiness, can’t be achieved by chasing it.
It’s not a brand claim. It’s the track record of a strategy that works.
30. Conditions will never be perfect. Go anyway.
Waiting for clarity is when you get passed.
Culture is your ceiling.
You can’t sell or scale past who you are.
